The Hartford Financial Services Group (known as “The Hartford”) was founded in Hartford, Connecticut 1810. The Hartford is a Fortune 500 company and is considered to be one of the United States’ largest insurance companies. With over 200 years of experience, The Hartford provides a wide array of insurance options with one of its top options being car insurance. The Hartford has been consistently ranked “excellent” in financial strength by several third party ratings agencies.

One point of confusion with The Hartford is their association with AARP. The AARP auto insurance program is a special auto insurance program available only to AARP members (acronym for “American Association of Retired People). However, AARP is NOT an insurer and is not responsible for paying out auto insurance claims. Rather, AARP allows its name to be used by The Hartford in the sale of car insurance policies.  If you are not a member of the AARP you may still receive a quote, but you will need to become a member in order to obtain coverage. It is important to note that you need to be age 50 or over to join the AARP.

Pricing

To compare The Hartford AARP pricing with other auto insurance companies, we created a profile for a 65-year-old male, driving a 2005 Audi Quattro. The driver had a clean driving record and recorded 11,000 annual miles each year. The quote for this profile was inline with what other companies were charging, so we feel The Hartford AARP offers a reasonable deal. Shopping Experience

The Hartford AARP online quote process steps the user through signing up for a preliminary quote. You’ll need to provide background information on yourself and other drivers you’d like to insure. This information includes name and address, vehicle specifications and driver information and history—standard information any insurance provider would need to price out your auto insurance. The entire process is only 4 pages long and relatively straightforward. If you have questions, The Hartford posts pertinent FAQs on the right hand side of the page. If the FAQs don’t fully explain what you’re interested in you can easily click on a button onscreen and a Hartford representative will call you.

Because this is a special insurance program for the AARP, questions are oriented toward the mature consumer. One section asks if you’ve taken a defensive driving/mature driving class, presumably to provide you with a discount if you have. Although on our sample quote we didn’t indicate we took the class, you might want to consider doing so for the extra discount. The Hartford does ask for the last 4 digits of your social security number during the quote process. However, you can choose not to provide this information.

Our final quote clearly specified what discounts we were receiving, coverage limits and the total price. Having the discounts spelled out was a nice touch. The user is able to adjust the quote for the specific categories they’d like to be insured for and the coverage amounts.

Bottom Line

According to consumers, The Hartford ranks in the “excellent” category for both claim satisfaction and overall shopping experience. We found this plan to be an excellent fit for AARP members who are price sensitive and interested in a carrier that provides top-flight customer service.
